This huge project is a culmination of the efforts of thecollectors, curators, authors and publishers of this project. Creditshould go to Institute of Jainology, for conceiving this project andpromoting it with great zeal and vigour from its conception to itsconclusion in this beautiful set of 3 volumes.
The work was initiated by Professor Candrabhal Tripathi, but afterhis untimely death, Professor Nalini Balbir took on this project andworked extremely hard at it for more than 10 years and brought it tothis fine conclusion, ably assisted by Kanubhai and Kalpana Sheth, ascholarly couple from Ahmedabad.
The scope of the Catalogue extends from the Jain manuscripts inthe Oriental Collection of the British Library to those in the IndiaOffice Library. This Catalogue sheds light on 1083 manuscripts in1425 entries. The importance of the Catalogue is not merelyscholarly. Original Jain manuscripts provide access to the teachingsof the sramanas, amongst the greatest and most enlightened teachersof mankind.
Jains celebrate jñana pañcami with great pomp andgrandeur by taking out ancient Jain manuscripts in grand processions, but what is more important is to bring out the knowledge contained inthe texts. It is hoped that this Catalogue will act as a springboardfor the renewed academic study of Jainism.
