Medieval India. The age of Nyaya. Logicians were the gladiators of this era. The Brahmanas, the Buddhists, the Jains, all had developed their Nyayasastras. Mallisena made a very important contribution by establishing logically, the supremacy of the Anekanta philosophy.

Mallisena originally composed Syadvadamañjari as a tika on Acarya Hemacandra's 'Anyayogavyayacchedika'. Nevertheless, the Syadvadamañjari has taken on the stature of an independent work on Jain Nyaya. Written in lucid style, Syadvadamañjari critically examines the classical Hindu system of six philosophies from the Jain point of view and establishes the superiority of Jain Darshana.

The work was first published in 1925; brilliantly edited by Motilal Ladha with no less than ten appendices. This is a freshly typeset edition published by Sri Vijayamahodayasuri Granthamala.

JAINA UDDHARANA KOSA - Volume One
(A Collection of the Citations in Prakrit and Sanskrit Languages asfound in the Jaina texts, Commentaries and the like)
Compiled and Edited with an Introduction, Bibliographies, Variants,Indices, etc. by Dr. Kamalesh Kumar Jain
Foreword by Professor S.R. Banerjee
B.L.Series no. 16
2003 250 x 190 mm 621 pp
81-208-1981-0 Hardcover Rs. 2100.00

"The value of this Kosa is indeed, incomparable. It has manifold purposes. First of all, these quotations inform us (about) the type of non-Jaina texts that were utilised by the Jainas. In order to build an edifice of Jaina thought and ideas, these quotations will help record the development of Jaina philosophical ideas and concepts."

It is from the citations used by Jain commentators that we can glean the history and scope of the role that Jains played in the development of Indian epistemological thought.

Jainism is one of the major three religions of India. It has made manifold contributions to Indian culture, ethics and spirituality. Jainas have played an active role in shaping India's astrology, astronomy, mathematics, linguistics, literature and languages. Jaina philosohphical treatises come to the forefront with Kundakunda's pioneering and unmatched Prabhrta works in Prakrit, and Vacaka Umawati's magnum opus Tattvarthasutra in Sanskrit.

Jaina literature is vast. Thousands of works on every topic under the sun. Many of these works have been lost with the passage of time. Only their essence remains preserved in the form of citations or Uddharanas.

These Uddharanas, all in Sanskrit or Prakrit, have been divided into three time phases:

Vol. 1 covers all those from 4th century CE to 9th century CE
Vol. 2 shall cover all those from 10th century CE to 13th century CE
Vol. 3 shall cover all those from 14th century CE to 19th century CE

The present Volume covers all the Prakrit and Sanskrit Uddharanas from the 4th century and earlier to 9th century CE.

The volume has been painstakingly edited by the diligent scholar Dr. Kamalesh Kumar Jain in nine years.

It's dedication page reads as under:

PANDIT NATHURAM PREMI
A renowned scholar of Jain Literature and History"

Digambara Acarya Samantabhadra, 2nd century CE, composed the 'Aptamimamsa' in 114 karikas laying the foundation for Jaina philosophical works and sowing the seeds of Jaina Nyaya.

Acarya Akalanka Deva, 5th century CE, the master of Jaina Nyaya, wrote the 'Ashtashati' an 800 karika commentary on this seminal work. In the 9th century, Acarya Vidyanandi, the great polemician wrote a comprehensive 8000 shloka commentary on Akalanka's 'Ashtashati' known as the 'Ashtasahasri'.

With its piercing appraisals of rival darshanas and a penetrating critique of opponent naiyayikas, this was the authoritative work on Jaina Nyaya.

With the advent of the Navyanyaya, it was felt that the school known as Akalanka Nyaya and its three great commentaries, the 'Prameyakamalamartanda', the 'Nyayakumudacandra' and the 'Ashtasahasri' would have to be rewritten or represented in a fresh way.

Shvetambara ascetic Yashovijaya, a super scholar and master of Navyanyaya, undertook this daunting task and composed an 8000 shloka vivarana on the 'Ashtasahasri' in the Navyanyaya style known as the 'Ashtasahasritatparyavivaranam', the present work.

Hence this work carries the central ideas of Jaina philosophy as mooted by four great scholar-monks :
Acarya Samantabhadra
Acarya Akalanka Deva
Acarya Vidyanandi
Upadhyaya Yashovijaya

Since the first three were Digambaras and the fourth Shvetambara, this great work underlines two things:
1. The basic unity of the Jaina Doctrine
2. When the two sects come together, great things happen

Navyanyaya works are typically composed in the vada style. This work includes 35 vadas, which is an incredible intellectual feat.

It features rebuttals to the great logicians Raghunatha Tarkashiromani; Raghudeva Bhattacarya; Madhusudana Sarasvati; Brahmendra; Gangesha Upadhyaya; Bhavadeva Tarkalankara; Bhattoji Dikshita; Gopala Sarasvati; Shantarakshita; Dharmakirti

Credit goes to Muni Vairagyarativijaya, who edited this great work with the help of the handwritten MSS. believed to be written by Yashovijaya, preserved at BORI in Pune. This edition is made especially useful by scholarly indexing and 11 appendices.

In the appendices, under the heading Tippani, the editor has referrred to more than 600 works to elucidate the words of Yashovijaya.

The final press copy of this work has been proof read and cross-checked three times against the original MSS, to minimise errors.

The composing and layout ensure that both 'Ashtasahasri' and 'Ashtasahasritatparyavivaranam' may be read on the same page.

To this end, different fonts have been used to distinguish the mula patha of both works. Relevant purva paksha, uttara paksha, vivarana grantha, citations and pramanas are located on the same page to facilitate study.

Many MSS used to edit this work have been sourced from Shri Kailashasagarasuri Jñanamandir, Koba.

Light is also shed on the intricacies of Apabhramsa grammar, the innnate difficulties in deciding the gender of certain words, common usages illustrate multiple meanings of words. Etymological roots are traced, the alphabet is discussed. Various references add to the reliability of the meanings, and citations are liberally used.

This dictionary is highly useful for the linguistics scholar as well as the Jaina scholar.
